Volunteering with Tearfund ICS

Tearfund is a Christian international aid and development agency working globally to end poverty and injustice, and restore dignity and hope in some of the world’s poorest communities.

Tearfund is one of six organisations sending International Citizen Service (ICS) volunteers.

We operate in more than 50 countries around the world, responding to emergencies and speaking out on behalf of poor people by petitioning governments, campaigning for justice and raising the profile of key poverty issues.

Where we work

If you volunteer for ICS with Tearfund you could work in:

  • Bolivia

  • Burundi

  • Rwanda

We work very closely with the local church and other local partners to make a real difference, working alongside local people to meet local needs.

You'll only work with projects that have specifically requested the help of ICS to meet local needs, so you know your contribution will make a real difference.

What you'll do

Our ICS programme is shaped by the needs and cultures of the local communities. For example, you could:

  • use music, art and drama to teach young people about sexual and reproductive health or support their education

  • support local youth, sport or education clubs

  • increase people’s access to food and clean water by, for example, establishing kitchen gardens.

How it works

Tearfund ICS volunteers will work in groups of between 6-12 people. Our placements last 10-12 weeks and you will be working alongside volunteers from the country you are staying in.

During 2013, teams of Tearfund ICS volunteers will leave for their overseas placements in January, April, July and October.

When you are overseas you will be supported by an in country co-ordinator as well as additional support where appropriate from the UK.
